Truck Won’t Start After a Regen: Causes and What to Do

A diesel truck that will not start after a regen is usually dealing with weak batteries or charging, a fuel supply problem, or an active fault code that was set during or after the regen, rather than the regen itself. Stop cranking, keep the truck parked somewhere safe, note any dash lamps and codes, and call (240) 780-8691. A mobile diesel mechanic can diagnose it where the truck sits, 24/7.

What a regen does, and why it can lead to a no-start

A regeneration burns the soot collected in the diesel particulate filter (DPF). During a regen the engine runs hotter and the system uses extra fuel and exhaust heat to do it. Regens can happen on their own while driving, or be run by a technician with a scan tool while the truck is parked.

The regen does not normally keep a healthy truck from starting. When a truck will not start afterward, the regen has often exposed another problem, such as batteries that were already weak, a fuel issue, or a fault that was waiting to set. Sometimes the no-start is simply a coincidence with unrelated timing.

Common reasons a truck will not start after a regen

  • Batteries or charging. A long idle during a parked regen can load a weak battery or charging system. Low voltage, loose or corroded terminals, or a failing battery can leave the truck cranking slowly or not at all.
  • Fuel supply. Low fuel, a plugged fuel filter, air in the fuel system, or a fuel delivery problem can show up after the engine has used extra fuel.
  • Active fault codes. A sensor, wiring, injector, or aftertreatment fault set during the regen can leave the engine computer limiting or preventing operation, depending on the engine and the code.
  • Aftertreatment or exhaust problems. A restricted exhaust or aftertreatment component can cause hard starting or poor running.
  • Electrical or starter issues. A starter, relay, cutoff switch, or wiring problem that has nothing to do with the regen but is now the thing keeping the truck down.

Safe things to check before you call

Keep it simple and stay safe. Do not crank the engine for long stretches, because that can overheat the starter and drain the batteries further.

  • Keep the truck outside and clear of anything flammable. Exhaust and aftertreatment parts can stay hot after a regen.
  • Check that the fuel gauge shows fuel and that any battery disconnect is on.
  • Look at the dash for lamps or messages, and write down what you see. Pull codes only if you have the right tool and know how.
  • If you are on a roadway, get the truck as far off the travel lanes as is safe, turn on hazards, and read our semi truck breakdown guide first.
  • Do not try to bypass or disable any emissions component to get it running.

How we diagnose and fix a no-start

Our mobile diesel mechanic checks batteries and charging, fuel delivery, and active and stored fault codes so the repair targets the real cause. If the aftertreatment system is involved, we repair it and restore it to proper operation. If the truck cannot be finished on site, the same dispatcher can send heavy-duty towing and recovery or bring it to our Randallstown shop.

See DPF derate repair and mobile diesel mechanic for the full service, and heavy-duty towing & recovery if it needs a tow.

Priority Towing and Recovery repairs and restores proper emissions systems on commercial diesel trucks. We do not perform emissions deletes or delete tuning, and we will not remove, bypass, or disable DPF, DEF, or SCR components.

Truck won’t start after regen FAQ

Why will my truck not start after a regen?

Common causes are weak batteries or charging, a fuel supply problem, or an active fault code set during or after the regen. The regen is often what exposed another problem. Diagnosis is needed to confirm the cause.

Should I keep cranking the engine?

No. Long cranking can overheat the starter and drain the batteries further. Stop, check the basics, and call (240) 780-8691.

Is it safe to run a regen where the truck is parked?

Exhaust and aftertreatment components get very hot during a regen. Keep the truck outside and clear of anything flammable, and follow the engine maker’s instructions.

Can a mobile mechanic fix this at the roadside or my yard?

Often, yes. Our mobile diesel mechanic diagnoses the truck where it sits. If it cannot be completed on site, the same dispatcher can arrange a tow to our Randallstown shop.

Will you delete the DPF so it starts?

No. We repair and restore proper emissions systems. We do not do emissions deletes or delete tuning.

Do you work on cars or pickups?

No. We service commercial diesel trucks only, not passenger-car auto repair.
