Ellicott City is hard on trucks
Ellicott City is the Howard County seat, and its roads are some of the hardest in our service area for big trucks. Old Ellicott City’s Main Street drops steeply to the Patapsco River. It is narrow, lined with parked cars, and has flooded badly more than once. Delivery trucks and buses that try it can lose brakes on the way down or fail to climb back out. Above town, US-40 (Baltimore National Pike) carries retail freight to the shopping centers. US-29 and MD-100 meet at the east edge of town, and MD-104 and MD-99 run north toward I-70.

I-70 exits around Ellicott City
- Exit 87, US-29: merges toward Columbia. Tire and derate calls happen here after the climb out of the Patapsco valley.
- Exit 83, Marriottsville Road: a partial interchange. Trucks that miss it look for a safe place to turn around.
- Exit 82, US-40: the east end of the I-70 and US-40 overlap. This is where delivery trucks head into Ellicott City.
- Exit 80, MD-32: toward West Friendship, Clarksville and Sykesville.
