Box Truck Towing in Baltimore: What to Do When a Box Truck Breaks Down

When a box truck breaks down in Baltimore, get it out of traffic, stow the liftgate if it is safe, note any dash lamps, and call (240) 780-8691. Tell dispatch the truck size, whether the box is loaded, and whether it rolls. Priority tows box trucks and straight trucks, including reefers, around Baltimore 24/7, and a mobile diesel mechanic in Baltimore can often fix a diesel box truck where it sits.

First steps on the street or the highway

If anyone is hurt or the truck is blocking a lane with no way to clear it, call 911 first and dispatch second.

  • Get as far from traffic as you safely can, turn on the hazards, and set out reflective triangles.
  • On a city street, stay out of the travel lane and away from the back of the truck while you wait.
  • If the liftgate is down and it still works, stow it. A lowered or failed liftgate changes how the truck can be hooked, so tell dispatch if it will not fold up.
  • Write down dash lamps, derate messages, or codes, and whether the engine cranks.
  • If it is a rental or leased truck, check whether your agreement names a roadside program you have to call first.

What to tell dispatch

  • Location. Street address or cross streets, or the highway, direction, and nearest exit. Around Baltimore that is usually I-95, I-695, I-83, or I-70.
  • The truck. Make and model, box length, and whether it has air brakes or hydraulic brakes.
  • Load. Empty or loaded, and whether it is a reefer with cargo that has to stay cold.
  • The problem. No-start, derate, flat, overheating, brake or air problem, or accident.
  • Clearance. Low garages, loading docks, alleys, or tight downtown streets where the truck sits.
  • Destination. Your yard, a shop, or the Randallstown diesel shop at 9325 Liberty Rd.

How a box truck is towed

A box truck is towed like the medium or heavy truck it is, not like a car. On many trucks the driveshaft has to be disconnected, or the drive wheels lifted, so the transmission is not damaged during the tow. Air-brake trucks with no air may have the spring brakes applied, which the operator has to deal with before the truck can move. That is why dispatch asks about brakes and whether the wheels turn.

Box trucks and straight trucks, including reefers, are part of our commercial truck towing, and wrecks or trucks off the pavement go to heavy-duty towing and recovery. Recovery is done with Owned Equipment by Wreckmaster-certified operators.

Tow it, or fix it first?

Many diesel box truck problems do not need a tow: DPF and DEF derates, dead batteries, no-starts, and air leaks can often be handled at the curb or in your lot. Start with truck road service or our Baltimore mobile diesel mechanic. If it cannot be fixed safely on site, the same dispatcher sends the tow.

We service commercial trucks only, not passenger cars, and we repair and restore emissions systems; we do not do deletes. Our Baltimore location is at 516 N Charles St, Suite 302; shop diesel repair is in Randallstown. See the full service area.

Box truck towing in Baltimore FAQ

Do you tow box trucks in Baltimore?

Yes. We tow box trucks and medium and heavy straight trucks, including reefers, in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and across Maryland, 24/7. Call (240) 780-8691.

My liftgate will not fold up. Can it still be towed?

Usually, but tell dispatch before the truck is sent. A lowered or damaged liftgate changes how the truck is hooked.

Can you tow a loaded box truck?

Tell dispatch whether the box is loaded and what is in it, including reefer cargo, so the tow is planned properly.

Can a mobile mechanic fix my box truck instead?

Often, yes, if it is a commercial diesel. Derates, no-starts, batteries, and air leaks can often be fixed where the truck sits. If not, the same dispatcher arranges the tow.

I rented the truck. Should I call you?

Check your rental or lease agreement first. Some require you to use their roadside program. If you are cleared to call your own, call (240) 780-8691.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept EFS, ComChek, and T-Check. Quotes are free.
