Dump Truck Towing in Maryland: What to Do and What to Tell Dispatch

A dump truck that is broken down, stuck on a job site, or wrecked needs a heavy-duty tow or recovery planned around three things: whether the bed is loaded, whether the body is down and secured, and whether the truck can roll. Make the scene safe, lower the bed only if it is safe to do so, and call (240) 780-8691. Priority dispatches heavy-duty towing and recovery across Maryland 24/7, and a mobile diesel mechanic when the truck may not need a tow at all.

First steps when a dump truck goes down

Safety comes before the truck. If anyone is hurt, the load has spilled into a travel lane, or fuel is leaking, call 911 first and dispatch second.

  • Get the truck as far off the travel lanes as you safely can, turn on the hazards, and set out reflective triangles.
  • If the bed is raised and it is safe to lower it, lower it. Do not drive or let anyone work under a raised body, and watch for overhead power lines on job sites.
  • Set the parking brake and chock the wheels if the truck is on a grade or soft ground.
  • Write down any dash lamps, derate messages, or fault codes before you shut the truck off.

What to tell dispatch

The right equipment depends on the truck and the situation, so the details on the first call matter.

  • Location. Road, direction, and the nearest exit or mile marker, or the job-site address and gate.
  • The truck. Make and model, single or tandem or tri-axle, and whether it has lift (pusher or tag) axles.
  • Load. Empty or loaded, and what is in the bed (stone, dirt, asphalt, debris).
  • Body. Down and latched, stuck up, or damaged.
  • The problem. No-start, derate, air or brake problem, flat, mechanical failure, stuck in mud, or accident.
  • Ground. Pavement, gravel, mud, or a slope. Soft ground often changes the plan from a tow to a winch-out first.
  • Destination. Your yard, your shop, or the Randallstown diesel shop at 9325 Liberty Rd.

Loaded dump trucks and stuck trucks

A loaded dump truck is far heavier than the same truck empty, and the load can shift during a recovery. Whether a loaded truck can be moved as is, or has to be dumped or offloaded first, depends on the truck, the load, and where it sits. Dispatch will ask and plan the tow around it.

Dump trucks also get stuck: soft shoulders, muddy job sites, and fill areas. Highway recoveries, uprights, and winch-outs are core heavy-duty work for us, done with Owned Equipment by Wreckmaster-certified operators. If the truck or a machine has to be hauled instead of towed, see RGN heavy haul towing and Landoll trailer towing; both trailers are 35 ton capacity.

Tow it, or fix it first?

Plenty of dump truck shutdowns can be handled where the truck sits. Short hauls, idling, and slow job-site work are hard on diesel aftertreatment, so DPF and DEF derates are a common reason a dump truck stops making power. Dead batteries, no-starts, and air leaks are others.

Start with our mobile diesel mechanic, DPF derate repair, or truck road service. If the truck cannot be fixed safely on site, the same dispatcher sends the tow. We repair and restore emissions systems; we do not do deletes or delete tuning.

Dump truck towing FAQ

Can you tow a loaded dump truck?

Tell dispatch whether the bed is loaded and what is in it. Whether the truck can be moved loaded, or has to be dumped or offloaded first, depends on the truck, the load, and where it sits, so dispatch plans it on the call.

My dump truck is stuck on a job site. Can you pull it out?

Yes. Winch-outs and recoveries are part of our heavy-duty work. Tell dispatch the ground conditions, whether the truck is loaded, and how to reach it.

The bed is stuck up. What should I do?

Keep everyone out from under the body, watch for overhead lines, and do not drive the truck. Tell dispatch the body is up when you call (240) 780-8691.

Can a mobile mechanic fix it instead of towing?

Often, yes. A mobile diesel mechanic handles many DPF and DEF derates, no-starts, battery, and air problems where the truck sits. If it cannot be fixed on site, the same dispatcher arranges the tow.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept EFS, ComChek, and T-Check. Quotes are free.

Are you available 24/7?

Yes. Dispatch is 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
