Semi Truck Rollover Recovery in Maryland: What Happens at the Scene

If a semi or heavy truck is on its side or roof in Maryland, call 911 first when anyone is hurt, fuel is leaking, or a lane is blocked, then call (240) 780-8691 for recovery. Tell dispatch the exact location, truck and trailer type, load, and whether the unit is on its side, on its roof, or partly upright. Priority dispatches heavy-duty towing and recovery with Owned Equipment and Wreckmaster-certified operators, 24/7.

First steps at a rollover scene

Scene safety comes before any recovery plan. Leave traffic control and fire or fuel response to emergency responders when they are on site.

  • If anyone is hurt, there is smoke or fire, or fuel or hazmat is leaking, stay clear and wait for 911 responders before approaching the wreck.
  • Keep yourself and bystanders out of the travel lanes and away from the load if it has shifted or spilled.
  • Do not try to upright the truck with straps from another tractor, a forklift, or improvised gear. That can make the wreck worse and put people under a shifting load.
  • Turn on hazards if the truck still has power and it is safe to do so from outside the travel lanes.
  • Write down unit number, trailer number, load type, and any hazmat placards before the scene gets crowded.

What to tell dispatch

Rollover recovery is planned around weight, position, and load. The first call decides which wrecker and how many units roll.

  • Location. Highway, direction, and nearest exit or mile marker, or the street address and cross street. Say which shoulder or ditch the truck is in.
  • Truck and trailer. Tractor only, tractor with dry van, reefer, flatbed, tanker, or a straight truck. Note if the trailer is still attached.
  • Position. On its side (driver or passenger), on its roof, or partly upright against a barrier or embankment.
  • Load. Empty, loaded, or spilled. Name the commodity if you know it. Say if there are hazmat placards.
  • Injuries and responders. Whether police, fire, or MDOT are already on scene.
  • Destination. Your yard, your shop, a salvage yard, or the Randallstown diesel shop at 9325 Liberty Rd when the truck can be towed after upright.

How upright and recovery usually work

Heavy recovery for a rolled semi is not a simple hook-and-go tow. Dispatch plans an upright with the right wrecker capacity, winch points, and cribbing so the tractor and trailer come up without tearing the frame or dumping the load further.

Once the unit is upright and can roll, the same ticket can include the tow to your shop or yard. If the trailer must be hauled instead of towed, see RGN heavy haul towing and Landoll trailer towing. For non-rollover heavy tows, see semi truck towing in Maryland.

After the upright: tow, road service, or shop

Some trucks can be driven a short distance after an upright if brakes, air, and steering check out. Many cannot. A truck road service or mobile diesel mechanic can check air leaks, electrical damage, and fluids before anyone tries to move it under its own power. If it has to ride, the same dispatcher sends the tow. We repair and restore emissions systems when that is part of the work; we do not do deletes or delete tuning.

Semi truck rollover recovery FAQ

Who do I call first at a rollover?

Call 911 first when anyone is hurt, fuel or hazmat is leaking, there is fire or smoke, or a lane is blocked. Then call (240) 780-8691 for heavy recovery so dispatch can plan the upright while responders manage the scene.

Can you upright a loaded trailer?

Tell dispatch what is on the trailer and whether any of it has spilled. Loaded uprights are planned around the commodity and weight. Hazmat placards must be reported on the first call.

Do I need a second company for the tow after upright?

No. The same dispatcher handles the upright and the tow to your yard or shop when the truck can move.

What if only the trailer rolled and the tractor is fine?

Say that clearly. Dispatch may recover the trailer separately and leave the tractor if it is safe and clear of the scene.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept EFS, ComChek, and T-Check. Quotes are free.

Are you available 24/7?

Yes. Dispatch is 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
