What Does a DPF Derate Mean?

A DPF derate means the engine computer is deliberately limiting power, and sometimes speed, because the diesel particulate filter or a related aftertreatment problem has been detected. It is a protective response, not a random failure. The fix is finding why it happened and repairing that, so call (240) 780-8691 for a mobile diesel mechanic, 24/7.

What the DPF does and why the truck derates

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust. Over time the soot has to be burned off in a process called regeneration, or regen. When regens happen normally the driver never notices.

If soot builds up faster than it burns off, or a sensor or related part is not working, the engine computer limits engine power to protect the engine and the aftertreatment system. That limit is the derate. Some trucks also warn first with a DPF lamp or a message, and the exact behavior varies by engine maker and model year.

Why a DPF derate happens

  • Regens that cannot finish. Operating conditions, a stopped regen, or a fault can keep the filter loading.
  • Sensor or wiring faults. Pressure, temperature, or NOx sensors can report bad data and trigger a derate even if the filter is not badly loaded.
  • Upstream engine problems. Fuel injection, EGR, turbo, or other problems can send extra soot to the filter or interfere with regen.
  • Aftertreatment component failures. Other parts of the exhaust and aftertreatment system can fail and affect the DPF.
  • Ash loading. Over time ash that does not burn off collects in the filter and can eventually require service.
  • Related DEF and SCR faults. A DEF-related derate is a different problem that can look similar on the dash.

What a DPF derate does not mean

A derate does not automatically mean the DPF needs to be replaced, and it does not mean the truck is totaled. Many derates trace back to something smaller, like a sensor or a regen that needs to be completed after the cause is fixed. It also does not mean the right answer is to remove or defeat the emissions system.

We repair and restore proper emissions systems on commercial diesel trucks. We do not do emissions deletes or delete tuning, and we will not remove, bypass, or disable DPF, DEF, or SCR components. The cost of the repair depends on the diagnosis; see DPF derate repair cost.

What to do if your truck is derated

  • Get to a safe spot if you are on the road. Turn on hazards, and see our semi truck breakdown guide.
  • Note every dash lamp and message, and any fault codes you have.
  • Do not keep driving a derated truck in traffic if it cannot keep up with the flow.
  • Call dispatch at (240) 780-8691 with the truck, location, and codes.
  • Let a mobile diesel mechanic diagnose it. Clearing a code without fixing the cause usually means the derate returns.

What a DPF derate means FAQ

What is a DPF derate?

It is the engine computer limiting power, and sometimes speed, because it detected a problem with the diesel particulate filter or a related aftertreatment issue. It is meant to protect the engine and the emissions system.

Does a derate mean I need a new DPF?

Not necessarily. Many derates come from a sensor fault, a regen that has not completed, or an upstream engine problem. Diagnosis finds out which.

Can I keep driving with a derate?

The truck will have limited power or speed. If you are on a busy road, get to a safe spot and call (240) 780-8691 rather than continuing in traffic.

How is a DPF derate repaired?

We diagnose the cause, repair what failed, and run a forced regen or derate clear when the truck can be made safe and legal on site. We repair and restore emissions systems; we do not do deletes.

Is a DEF derate the same thing?

No. DEF derates come from the diesel exhaust fluid or SCR system. They can look similar on the dash but have different causes.

Do you work on cars or pickups?

No. We service commercial diesel trucks only, not passenger-car auto repair.
